A rare event took place last week – Emily and I were able to take a spring break trip! Our nephew/cousin, Austin, had a New York City trip on his bucket list and ended up sharing the experience with us and his mother, Kelli. (I think it was going to be a cousin trip, but the idea of taking the mothers for the $$$ was too good to pass up.) It was a walk down memory lane for us mothers as we were in the big apple with the Newton High School Marching Band 31 years ago! (During that trip we played at Rockefeller Center and marched in the Cherry Blossom Parade in Washington D.C.)
For this trip we chose to stay right on Times Square!
We were able to walk to the Empire State Building, and Rockefeller Center where we got to experience the TODAY Show on Tuesday a.m. Austin even made a sign to invite his girlfriend to prom. We ventured out to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island which was not open to the public on our previous trip, saw the 9/11 Memorial, and took some bus tours of the city. A Broadway show – The Jersey Boys was our final event.
A highlight of our trip was the chance to meet up with Nancy. We met the Conturso family four years ago when they won a trip sponsored by the Iowa Food and Family Project – “Be Our Guest, Be A Farmer” Contest to visit an Iowa Farm.
Nancy’s office building, Ernst and Young, was just a couple of blocks from our hotel. We even got to see her office. From her office you can see the ball that drops in Times Square on New Year’s Eve! Next, Nancy took us on the Subway(one thing we were advised not to do, so that was exciting to have that opportunity with an expert). We went to Grand Central Station. It was busy, but beautiful! (Sometimes I use the words grand central station to describe a day on the farm!!) Nancy took us to a nice little pub that had wonderful hamburgers! It was great to reconnect with Nancy!
Back to the real world – we arrived home around midnight Wednesday and awoke @ 6:00 a.m., Thursday to Kevin announcing, “Pig truck is here!” Our first load (200 pigs) of this group is ready for market! We made it home just in time!!
